It's Rattlesnake Season!

A rattlesnake bite is a veterinary emergency. It results in serious injury or even death to thousands of dogs each year. Rattlesnake venom is a complex mixture of toxins that spreads through a dog’s body following the bite. Red Rock Rattlesnake Vaccine was developed specifically to help defend dogs from the dangerous effects of rattlesnake venom. Rattlesnakes are found in a variety of habitats. They are most active in warmer seasons from spring to autumn especially here in central Texas. Like people, dogs may stumble upon a snake by accident, Curiosity or a protective instinct can place your dog at risk.

Damage caused by a rattlesnake bite can be serious.

When injected into an unprotected dog, the toxins in snake venom are very painful and can have serious consequences. Even if your dog survives the immediate effects of a rattlesnake bite, he can be permanently injured by the venom.

Treatment of a snake bite is expensive.

Treatment may include antivenom injecctions that can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars. use of antivenom is associated with an increased risk of adverse effects which can complicate a dog’s recovery. Other costs of snakebite treatment may include hospitalization, intravenous fluids, other medicines, and even surgery. Vaccination can reduce the impact of snakebite, reduce or eliminate the need for antivenom, and decrease other treatment costs.

How much does it cost?

The Red Rock Rattlesnake Vaccine consists of an initial vaccination cost of $18.50 plus an exam fee. The follow up booster costs $18.50 and is required 4 weeks later. It is reccomended that future rattlesnake vaccinations be included in your dog’s annual vaccination schedule.

Meet Renee Mead, DVM

Dr. Mead attended Oklahoma State University and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Science in 2004. She was awarded her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2008. Dr. Mead was the American Association of Feline Practitioners’ Senior Student of the year in 2008. She also was the recipient of the Above and Beyond Award during her clinical year which is given to a senior student that shows outstanding compassion towards pets and their owners. Dr. Mead is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and American Association of Feline Practitioners. She is an advocate of all things feline with a focus on feline internal medicine and wellness care. In her free time Dr. Mead enjoys hiking, reading, traveling and most of all spending time with her husband, Jim and their 7 cats. Dr. Mead is here at Zoot every Saturday and beginning April 16th will be here each Monday as well.

Real Grass! Cage-Free Boarding

At Zoot, our boarding is suite style with absolutely no cages. Dogs relax in their own 6’ x 6’ private indoor air conditioned room complete with a fleece covered pet cot. Connected to each suite is an equal size private covered outdoor patio. 24 hour webcam access and flat panel TV’s adorn our extra large (6’ x 9’ both in/out) deluxe suites. Our all-inclusive pricing structure ensures your pet is taken out four times per day for supervised group play on our expansive 4 private acres. We have enough staff that we do not leave your dog unattended. Food is included in the price but you are welcome to bring your own at no extra cost. No walks in the asphalt parking lot around here….we have lots of real grass and real live oaks to pee on! We do not charge to administer your pet’s medications. Rest assured there is a veterinarian on-site 6 days per week and on call should they need to be consulted. Lastly, we refuse to send home smelly dogs as they are given a complementary bath upon departure. Clients are encouraged to stop by for a tour. We are an open book and will show you all aspects of our operation including a behind the scenes look at our state-of-the-art hospital in addition to our unique boarding facility.

Our 3rd Year Anniversary
